Segregation of Concrete

Segregation can be defined as the separation of the constituent materials of concrete. A good concrete is one in which all the ingredients are properly distributed to make homogeneous or uniform mixture. If a sample of concrete shows a tendency of separation say, coarse aggregate from rest of the ingredients of concrete then that sample is said to be exhibiting the segregation. Such concrete is not only going to be weak but also lack of homogeneity is also going to induce all undesirable properties in the hardened concrete.

There are three types of segregation may be present in concrete:-
a)the coarse aggregate separating out or settling down from rest of the mix,
b)the paste separating away from coarse aggregate,
c)water separating out from the rest of the material being a material of low specific gravity.
