FINENESS TEST OF CEMENT
OBJECT
To determine
the fineness of cement.
APPARATUS
I.S. sieve
no. 9, sieve shaker, balance with weight box.
MATERIALS:- Test sample
of cement.

PROCEDURE
- Take 100 gm
of test sample of cement.
- Any air set
lump of cement may be broken with fingers.
- Put a 100
gm sample of cement in the IS sieve no. 9. Put the sieve in the sieve
shaker and continuously for a period of 15 minutes.
- The residues retain on the sieve wt. the residue and find the percentage of residue.
RESULT
The
residue should not exceed 10 %.
PRACTICAL UTILITY
Determination
of the percentage of the fineness of cement is of great importance, because the
strength of cement depends upon its fineness. More the finer cement more will
be quicker action with water and gain early strength, but due to this, the rate
of heat of hydration increase and cracks are developed. If cement is not finer,
the strength of cement decreases.
CALCULATION
Calculate the residue of cement R as
the mean of R1 & R2 (or
R1, R2 &
R3) in %, expressed to the nearest 0.1%.
PRECAUTION
§ Before sieving, air set lumps of cement should be broken
§ Sieving should be done by rotating the sieve and not by
translation.
